Key Responsibilities Apply both fundamental chemistry knowledge and understanding of polymer, coating, and/or coating system principles to plan, conduct, and/or direct experimental work, including the formulation, preparation, application, and testing of coatings. Generate, analyze, and interpret experimental data to yield new knowledge and steer new product platform development. Deliver optimized solutions to challenging technical problems through the application of appropriate scientific, experimental, and statistical methods. Work toward technical landmarks and deliver results against bold timelines. Work closely with regional product development and customer development laboratories to understand their needs (and their customers' needs) and incorporate these needs into new product platforms to enable broad deployment. Partner with the resin synthesis and fundamental capability development teams to coordinate R&D activities and implement novel technologies. Develop a fundamental understanding of substrate protection technologies, needs, and application processes (including details of key customer lines and equipment), and apply this knowledge to develop robust and capable product platforms. Proactively identify knowledge gaps and/or deficiencies in characterization tools/methods and take action to eliminate these gaps. Develop and demonstrate new test methods that will help to accelerate the assessment of new coating formulations and simulate customer line conditions to increase the speed and success rate of new product launches. Initiate and champion scientific knowledge exchange with technical associates around the globe to support knowledge retention, collaboration, and accelerated product development. Facilitate multi-functional communication and collaboration with the project management and commercial teams to ensure alignment on technical objectives, timelines, progress, and future needs. Document and communicate technical conclusions through written and verbal summaries, reports, presentations, and updates, with particular attention toward project review and Stage-Gate meetings. Actively propose and demonstrate concepts for innovative new technologies, coating systems, and applications to support substrate protection product portfolio expansion. Clearly and thoroughly detail findings, observations, measurements, data, and test results for communication to team members and leadership. Empower, mentor and directly supervise colleagues, including chemists and laboratory technicians. Qualifications Requires a degree in Chemistry or a relevant technical field, such as Materials Science, Polymer Science, or an Engineering subject area. Requires a Ph.D. and 2
years, a Masters and 10
years, or a Bachelors and 15
years of relevant industrial experience. Knowledge of polymer chemistry and resin synthesis principles. Experienced with researching, developing, and commercializing successful coating technologies. Ability to lead technical research projects with multiple partners. Ability to work both independently and as a leader of a multi-functional team in an agile, fast-paced, environment. Expertise in using planned experimentation (experimental design or DOE principles) skills to rapidly resolve problems and optimize systems based on desired performance properties. Excellent oral and written communication skills; comfortable delivering presentations to different levels up and down the technical and business organization.
Salary Range:
$200K -- $250K
Minimum Qualification
